Frostbite Free Ride: A Winter Ride Through Washoe Valley to Virginia City

There's something about a crisp winter morning in Northern Nevada that makes you want to ride. January 2021 brought one of those rare clear winter days — cold enough to feel alive, but warm enough to make it happen. When Battle Born Harley-Davidson of Carson City announced the Frostbite Free Ride, I didn't hesitate.

Suiting Up and Heading Out

The ride kicked off at Battle Born Harley-Davidson, a great gathering spot for the Northern Nevada riding community. From the moment I arrived, the energy was right — riders from all walks of life, all there for the same reason: to get out and ride, even in January. I met some great people before we even left the parking lot, which is one of the things I love most about group rides. The motorcycle community has a way of making strangers feel like old friends within minutes.

Layering was key that morning. Under my leather I had on our Skull & Crossbone Pull Over Hi-Viz Hoodie — the hi-viz color adds visibility on winter roads when the light is flat and drivers aren't expecting to see a rider, and the fleece kept me warm without adding bulk under the jacket. The Route: Washoe Valley and Old Washoe City

We rolled out through Washoe Valley along Foothill Road, one of those routes that reminds you why you ride. The valley was quiet, the mountains were dusted with snow on the peaks, and the road stretched out ahead with that wide-open Nevada feeling that's hard to describe if you haven't experienced it. We passed through Old Washoe City, a stretch of road with deep Nevada history and a character all its own — the kind of place that feels like it belongs to riders and locals, not tourists.

Up Geiger Grade to Virginia City

Then came Geiger Grade — the climb that earns its reputation every single time. The switchbacks up to Virginia City are a rite of passage for any Northern Nevada rider. In January, with the cold air biting and the views opening up across the valley below, it felt especially rewarding. We crested the grade and pulled into the rest stop on the north end of Virginia City, took a breath, took in the view, and let the moment settle.

Virginia City has always held a special place for me — it's not just a historic mining town, it's the heart of what VCMCo. is built around. Standing there on a cold January day, surrounded by fellow riders, it felt like exactly the right place to be.

Back Down and Back to Battle Born

We made our way back down State Route 341 toward Carson City and returned to Battle Born Harley-Davidson, where the crew had put together a raffle. I didn't win anything — but honestly, that wasn't the point. The point was the ride, the route, and the people. I walked away with new friendships that have lasted, and a reminder of why winter riding in Nevada is something you should never write off.
